NFL Boycott – Letter from a Marine Colonel

I came across this post on FB by longtime conservative Chris Sorenson. An NFL boycott will most likely never happen due to the apathy and self-indulgence we have resigned ourselves to as a country, but this letter from a retired Marine Colonel inspired me. We have a voice, but we have forgotten how to use it. Since when did the behavior of a misinformed few become a social event that we even need to listen to? The reality of it is that these actions are what is inciting racial tensions.

But the uninformed are just pawns. The abhorrent behavior of our leadership in politicizing these events and in making incorrect public statements because they did not wait for facts to surface is inexcusable. What do we do? Put our hands up and say “Oh well”? We have the ability to take control of our country again if we do two things. First, we need to simply inconvenience ourselves enough to take a stand. Second, we have to vote. Whether you like our candidate or not, you have to vote. Not voting is a vote for the other side. Back to the topic at hand.

NFL Boycott

You don’t have to go cold turkey by doing a full-spectrum NFL boycott, just boycott the teams whose players show such disrespect for our flag and our country. I want to tell them, “Don’t like it, get out! You don’t have any valuable skills anyway.” Our soldiers who give their lives protecting our freedoms (even for entitled brats like these), they are the heroes. Our men and women in blue who risk their safety every single day keeping the streets safe, they are the heroes. Our teachers who fight everyday to provide education for our youth despite abysmal pay, they are the heroes. The nameless thousands and thousands who give their life to service of others, they are the heroes.

The key word is team and until the NFL gets that, then they should not be rewarded for this type of behavior. I love football, but I don’t watch it to see some ignorant person make a personal statement. When that happens, it is time to turn the channel. If you want the behavior to change, then you need to stand up and say something to make the behavior change. When enough of us do it, then the behavior will change. Letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

FROM: Marine Colonel (Ret) Jeffrey A. Powers

I’ve been a season pass holder at Yankee Stadium, Yale Bowl and Giants Stadium.

I missed the ’90-’91 season because I was with a battalion of Marines in Desert Storm. 14 of my wonderful Marines returned home with the American Flag draped across their lifeless bodies. My last conversation with one of them, Sgt Garrett Mongrella, was about how our Giants were going to the Super Bowl. He never got to see it.

Many friends, Marines, and Special Forces Soldiers who worked with or for me through the years returned home with the American Flag draped over their coffins.

Now I watch multi-millionaire athletes who never did anything in their lives but play a game, disrespect what brave Americans fought and died for. They are essentially spitting in the faces and on the graves of real men, men who have actually done something for this country beside playing with a ball and believing they’re something special! They’re not! My Marines and Soldiers were!

You are complicit in this! You’ll fine players for large and small infractions but you lack the moral courage and respect for our nation and the fallen to put an immediate stop to this. Yes, I know, it’s their 1st Amendment right to behave in such a despicable manner.

What would happen if they came out and disrespected you or the refs publicly?

I observed a player getting a personal foul for twerking in the end zone after scoring. I guess that’s much worse than disrespecting the flag and our National Anthem. Hmmmmm, isn’t it his 1st Amendment right to express himself like an idiot in the end zone?

Why is taunting not allowed yet taunting America is OK? You fine players for wearing 9-11 commemorative shoes yet you allow scum on the sidelines to sit, kneel or pump their pathetic fist in the air. They are so deprived with their multi-million dollar contracts for playing a freaking game!

You condone it all by your refusal to act. You’re just as bad and disgusting as they are. I hope Americans boycott any sponsor who supports that rabble you call the NFL. I hope they turn off the TV when any team that allowed this disrespect to occur, without consequence, on the sidelines. I applaud those who have not.

Legends and heroes do NOT wear shoulder pads. They wear body armor and carry rifles.

They make minimum wage and spend months and years away from their families. They don’t do it for an hour on Sunday. They do it 24/7 often with lead, not footballs, coming in their direction. They watch their brothers carted off in pieces not on a gurney to get their knee iced. They don’t even have ice! Many don’t have legs or arms.

Some wear blue and risk their lives daily on the streets of America. They wear fire helmets and go upstairs into the fire rather than down to safety. On 9-11, hundreds vanished. They are the heroes.

I hope that your high paid protesting pretty boys and you look in that mirror when you shave tomorrow and see what you really are, legends in your own minds. You need to hit the road and take those worms with you.

My NFL Boycott Email

Dear Mr. Goodell,

This is to inform you that I will be boycotting the viewing of NFL events demonstrating any type of political statement until you take action. I do not watch football to see personal statements from uninformed, entitled millionaire brats when our soldiers, our police and our countless true heroes risk their lives everyday for the flag and our country. What is worse is that they are showing their ignorance by supporting a lie. Solidarity? In what way and in what universe has this divisive behavior become a solidarity event? How despicable and how disgraceful. Shame on you sir for allowing this type of infantile behavior.

I already have issue with the disproportionate pay, but now I no longer have interest in supporting a politicized sporting event. These are teams on the field, not individuals, and until they can act in such a manner that is reflective of the blood spilled to preserve our freedoms, then I no longer support you. I will not watch any team or any event that displays disrespect for my flag and my nation.
